Headaches, sleepiness, low attention spans and a general sense of feeling unwell are just some of the side effects of spending too long indoors. You thought it was just your job, right? Scientists say it's all about ions, or, more specifically, negative ions. Ions are charged particles in the air; some are charged negatively, and some are charged positively. Negative ions, put in non-scientific terms, are basically oxygen ions with an extra electron attached, produced through water molecules, which is why they are in such beautifully abundant supply near fresh, flowing water supplies such as rivers, streams, seas and waterfalls. This also explains how refreshing it can be to have a have a shower, swim or take a bath when we are feeling fatigued.
In research on hundreds of patients over five years, the late Dr Igho Hart Kornblueh, from the University of Pennsylvania, found that negative ions have a sedative, healing and pain-relieving effect. He reported that patients recovered 57 per cent faster from surgery when exposed to negative ions, and treatment with negative ions provided relief from symptoms of hay fever for 63 per cent of patients. Conversely, positively ionised air (such as that from dirty, dry, hot winds and excessive indoor heating) produced headaches, nasal obstruction, dryness of the throat, dizziness and an itching nose. Dr Kornblueh also found that treatment with negative ions, at a level found in a natural setting, reduced the need for post-operative painkillers. Not only that, but getting your dose of negative ions increases efficiency.
Get some exercise outdoors every day, preferably near running water. When you go to sleep, turn electrical appliances off at the power point. If you are feeling sick, asthmatic or under the weather, be aware that your sensitivity to positive ions will be increased. Try to take a walk along the beach or sit in the garden. These natural elements all help to counter the effects of positive ions.
Alternatively commercial ionisers like Nikao ionbands charged with negative ions property help counter the effects of Wi-Fi and positive ions in the atmosphere, raising the alkaline level in your body and neutralises acidic toxins.
